864,000 empty homes in Britain Thousands of people homeless |
SQUATTING is a solution to homelessness, empty properties, speculation and building unnecessary new homes on greenfield sites. It provides homes for those who can't get public housing and who can't afford extortionate rents. With the selling off of council housing, relentless privatisation of public assets to greedy individuals and private companies, general corruption and incompetence of many housing associations and councils, it has become necessity for many of us. SQUATTING creates space for needed community projects. These have included art projects, community computing projects, childcare/nursery projects and much more. Autonomous spaces are necessary in an atomised society where many of our community resources, such as community centres and buildings housing advice services etc. have been sold off or have taken over by elitist groups with their own agenda. SQUATTING means taking control instead of being pushed around by bureacrats and property owners. Despite what the mainstream media would often have us think, squatters come from many different backgrounds, from nurses to computer programmers, from cooks to secretaries, families, students, and community collectives. |
